What is this?
Metaphors are phrases which are used to represent objects or actions which do not apply in a literal sense. They are used to "carry ideas across" in a figurative manner.
Why is this important?
Metaphors are a very common occurance in interpersonal communication and people often develop favorite metaphors which they come to rely on in helping them "carry their ideas across" to other people. When we recognize the preferred metaphors someone is using it provides us with another opportunity to develop "liking", "go first" and generally speed up the free exchange of ideas and build rapport.
It's all part of the game. Life is a bowl of cherries. Don't be a chicken about it. Just jump in head first.
